Raymond Richard Corwin

June 28, 1961 — October 21, 2010

Raymond Richard Corwin
Raymond Corwin died in his sleep October 21, 2010 in Jacksonville, FL. He was 49 years old. Known to his friends as Ray, he was born in Southampton, NY on June 28, 1961 to Dr. Donald and Dorothy Corwin. He grew up in Southampton and attended Southampton High School, where he was a member of the golf team. Ray was born with cystic fibrosis but never let that define who he was --- he was very active and had a passion for weather, fast cars, boats, science and travel. Ray was an avid Gator fan. He loved his little dog “Jazzy.”
During high school summers Ray worked at Dunkerly’s Office Supply and Bofill’s Marine, and then attended college in Columbia, SC. He went on to the University of Florida where he received his certificate in ophthalmic technology. He taught technology students in the ophthalmology clinic of the Shands Jacksonville teaching hospital for 10 years, until his health started to fail. He had a double lung transplant in 1997 in Madison, WI and recovered well enough to continue his career in ophthalmology as a clinical specialist for Marco Ophthalmic in Jacksonville. There he helped develop a wavefront product and taught many students how to refract. Ray’s health failed again and he had several medical procedures, the last being a craniotomy after a fall last year. Amazingly, Ray survived all of these life challenges and continued to try and live a full life
Predeceased by his father Dr. Donald Corwin, mother Dorothy Corwin and sister Carol Diane Corwin, Raymond Corwin is survived by his brother James Whitney Corwin; his sister Susan Corwin Mitchell and her husband Chuck Mitchell; a niece, Kathleen Kayner Mitchell; and an aunt, uncle, and many cousins.
A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at the Lakewood Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, FL at 11 am on Saturday November 6th, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, Ray asks that you register to be an organ donor. Donations in Ray Corwin’s name to the Cystic Fibrosis foundation 8382 Baymeadows Rd # 9 Jacksonville, FL 32256 or any charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
