Robert F. Armstrong

Robert F. Armstrong, 89, of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Warren, Ohio, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at McGraw Hospice Center in Jacksonville.


He was born June 11, 1920 in Cambridge, Ohio, the son of the late Lester R. and Nelle Miller Armstrong. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bruce C. Armstrong.


Bob is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Phyllis Hampson Armstrong, three daughters, Leslie Post, Roberta Moronti, and Patricia Frank, son-in-law Michael Frank, and four grandchildren, Jason Silvey, Jaimie Post Shires, Michael Post and Robert Frank, all of Jacksonville, FL.


Bob received a B.A. in Education from Glenville State College, Glenville, WV, and an M.A. in Administration from Kent State University, Kent, OH. He captained his college basketball team to a state championship and runner-up position in the national NAIA championship. He served as a Staff Sergeant Investigator in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the US Army with the 2nd Armored Division in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany during World War II. While stationed in Indiana, he played basketball for the Indianapolis Kautskys of the National Basketball League. He was a member of the Trumbull County Coaches Club basketball team.


He was a middle school and high school teacher and coached baseball, track and basketball in Braceville and Springfield Township school systems. Later, he was owner/manager of TRW Title Insurance Co. of Ohio and Louisiana. Bob Armstrong has been inducted into both the Warren, OH Sports Hall of Fame and the Glenville State College Athletic Hall of Fame.


An active member of Christ Episcopal Church, he served as usher, coach of youth league teams, vestry member and Junior Warden. He was also a life-long member of the Elks Club. Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling, golf, gardening, canning, and wine making.


Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 400 San Juan Dr., Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 1, 2009. The family will receive friends at a reception immediately following the service in the church parish center.


A memorial service and inurnment will be held at the Columbarium at Christ Episcopal Church in Warren, OH at a future time.
