ABBOTT Mary Lou Fuller Abbott She was born on October 4, 1907, daughter of Charles Edgar and Minnie Belle Green Fuller of Henderson, North Carolina. She graduated from the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina with the senior honor 'Best All Around.' She became an English teacher in Winston Salem for several years and then moved to New York City to serve as librarian at Columbia University where she met Carlton Abbott of Woodstock, Vermont, who was also getting his master's degree at Columbia University. They married and lived for fifty years in the Philadelphia area until his death. Mary Lou was active in the Garden Club of the area and in the American Association of University Women where she was active in all phases of that organization and eventually became the president. Mary Lou was a voracious reader and was often called upon to give book reviews in the Philadelphia area. She especially loved being a student of politics and was active in the League of Women Voters in Philadelphia. Her husband enjoyed rose gardening and she loved gardening, reading, entertaining, playing bridge, collecting antiques and traveling. The Abbotts had two daughters, one of whom died at the age of 34, leaving four daughters who were raised by Mary Lou and her husband. Her other daughter, Kay Slaughter Staudt, lives in the Ortega area and often plays the piano at Sterling House where Mary Lou enjoys singing with the other residents. As the result of a fall in 2004 with a broken hip, Mary Lou now chooses to live with a wheelchair but she doesn't take any medicine and is proud of her good health. She will tell you that Sterling House is a fine place to live! Mary Lou is survived by her daughter, Kay Abbott (Slaughter) Staudt of Jacksonville (Warren) and her three children: Samuel Garland Slaughter of Milford, Michigan, (Anne) and their twin daughters, Claire Slaughter Joyce (Tom) and four children and the Reverend Elizabeth Butler Jameson (Jim) and her two children. Mary Lou Abbott is also survived by a niece Diane Blanton Cannon of Ponte Vedra Beach (Norman L.) and nephew Dr. Walker S. Blanton of Glen St. Mary (Cameron Tabor). She has seven grandchildren, four of whom are daughters of her deceased child, Carole Abbott Stackel. They are: Victoria Prichard Oldham of Amelia Island, Annie Stackel Hendricks of Coronado, California, Antonia Stackel Naylor of Brunswick, Georgia and Elizabeth Stackel Olmstead of Worthington, Ohio. Mary Lou Abbott is a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church where a memorial service will be held on Friday, February 18th at 11:00 in the chapel.
