Suzanne Haas Meadows

April 15, 1946 — January 7, 2025

Suzanne Haas Meadows peacefully passed away January 7, 2025.

Suzanne was born in Nebraska on April 15, 1946, to Colonel Robert and Ruth Haas. Her father’s military service took the family to numerous places during her childhood, with her early years spent in Germany, Kansas, Alaska, and Texas. She graduated from pharmacy school at her alma mater Auburn University. Over the years she loved rooting for the Auburn Tigers football team. If she passed a random stranger wearing Auburn attire, they were guaranteed a greeting of “War Eagle”!

Her professional career was spent as a hospital and consultant pharmacist, eventually specializing in geriatric pharmacy. In the early years of Volunteers in Medicine and WeCare Jax, nonprofits that provide health care to the working uninsured and uninsured, she was a volunteer pharmacist. She served on the board of Safe Harbor Boys Home for several years and was supportive of local animal rescue groups.

After retirement, she became a Master Gardener. She particularly enjoyed pulling weeds and never met a weed she didn’t want to pull! She was an avid reader, always keen to learn something new. As a lifelong learner, she enjoyed traveling with Road Scholar which specializes in educational programs. She enjoyed being out in nature, loved animals and birds. Some of her world travels were especially designed for birdwatching and several of her bucket list destinations were Galapagos Islands, Peruvian Amazon and South Africa. In the Galapagos Islands, she was privileged to observe the courtship dance of the critically endangered Waved Albatross. It truly was a National Geographic moment. In the Peruvian Amazon, she fished for Piranha and saw Pink Dolphins. In South Africa’s Kruger National Park she saw the famous Big Five and an elephant bumped her van while crossing the road.

Weekends often found her going to garage and estate sales looking for treasures. She enjoyed cribbage, crosswords, concerts, grilling steaks and smoking a turkey in the smoker with hickory nuts from the yard, chilling with a glass of wine while reading her favorite magazines and newspapers, day tripping with her wife looking for birds and eating blueberries. She loved blueberries.

She is survived by her wife and life partner of 38 years, Carly Wainwright, and her sister Jeanette Haas. A gentle spirit with a million-dollar smile, she will be missed by all who loved her. To honor Suzanne’s memory, donations may be made to: WJCT Public Media, Jacksonville Humane Society, or your local or national Alzheimer’s Association.
