Shirley Campbell Nasby

August 20, 1929 — January 24, 2019

Shirley Campbell Nasby

Born August 20, 1929 – Died January 24, 2019.  Life is lived in the dash and what a life Shirley lived.  God-loving, trailblazing, world traveling, mother and wife, Shirley joins her husband (Tollef Owen--Nas) and sisters (Alice Jane and Daryl) on her final journey.  Survived by her three boys—Tom (Cathy), T.O. (Candy) and John (Nadine), one brother (Jim Campbell), eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Shirley lived a remarkable life.  Born in Blairsville, PA, Shirley graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and DT Watson—practicing as a physical therapist for over 40 years.  Shirley met Nas (a US Air Force Officer) in West Palm Beach in the early 1950s.  Married 22 December 1956, her husband’s duty stations took her and her family to Germany, the Philippines, and Iran in addition to numerous statewide bases in Illinois, Virginia, New Jersey, Florida and Ohio.  With each move, Shirley immersed herself into her kids, her profession and her community.

With her boys active in sports, Shirley would attend all of their games.  She would throw batting practice and when her shoulder would pop out of joint due to a childhood accident, Shirley would go up to the backstop and pop it in again.  Her love of family was first and foremost in life.

Shirley loved being a physical therapist and gravitated to treating children with cerebral palsy and spina bifida.  She also loved to teach others, sharing her knowledge and skills at university in the Philippines and Iran.

Shirley volunteered with her church (most recently St. Michael’s in Wellington), serving with WELCA, teaching Sunday school and being a greeter.  When Shirley retired as a PT, she became a guardian ad litem—at one point overseeing the handling of 30 families.  Shirley’s favorite task as an ad litem was to provide a Christmas gift to each child as a sign that someone truly cared.

The Nasby family wishes to thank the team that has lovingly cared for Shirley (Marie, Martha, Kim, Ola, Sonia, and Bridgette) and Erica with Community Hospice.  A Memorial Rosary and Mass will be held on February 15 th , 2019 beginning at 6:30 PM at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, Jacksonville, Florida.  Shirley’s final Memorial Service will be held February 22, 2019 at 11:30 AM at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church, Wellington Florida.  Interment will be at the South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Florida on February 22, 2019.
