Salvador Castro, MD, peacefully passed away at his home in Jacksonville, Florida, on Tuesday, October 31, 2017.
He graduated from medical school at Universidad de Antioquia, Medellin Colombia, and worked as a pathologist with Jacksonville Pathology Consultants.
Salvador enjoyed sailing, scuba diving, fishing, hiking, gardening, cooking, traveling, and photography.
He will be remembered for being the first pediatric pathologist to practice in Northeast Florida and for being one of the first pediatric pathologist to perform fine-needle aspiration, and also for fulfilling his dream and helping to launch and develop an excellent pediatric pathology program at Wolfson Children’s Hospital. He made immeasurable contributions to Baptist Medical Center and children’s healthcare in our region as well as abroad.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of 60 years, Pilar Mejia Castro; his son Miguel Castro, daughters and son-in-laws Maria and Mark Bruck, and Clara and Mike Renaker; his grandchildren Jason, Jessica, Sophia, Natalie, Christina and Jennifer; and siblings Teresa, Rosario and Hugo Castro.
Memorial services: Monday, November 20 th , at 1:00 pm at San Jose Catholic Church, 3619 Toledo Rd, Jacksonville, Florida.
