Robert Irvin, 77, of Jacksonville, FL, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2024 at his residence.
He was born on October 19, 1946 in El Paso, TX to Edward DeLeon and Dixie (Cantrell) Irvin. Robert enjoyed a 40+ year career in aviation maintenance, a profession he learned from his beloved dad Wes Irvin, and retired from CSX Transportation in 2017.
Robert's dry wit meant you could not be in his presence without laughing. He loved running, hiking in the mountains of North Carolina, animals, amateur radio, and science fiction novels by Isaac Asimov and Ray Bradbury.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Irvin of Jacksonville, FL; daughter Kate Irvin of Washington, DC; daughter Kimberly (Tom Warren) Miller of Greensboro, NC; son Brad (Angie) Miller of Jacksonville, FL; three grandchildren, Carli Miller, Abigail Miller-Warren, and Daniel Warren; and four siblings, Candace Hall, Barbara Crawfoot, Jimmy Bates, and Bill Bates.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Charles Bates.
Special thanks to Catherine LaCombe, caregiver and friend, for all of her assistance and love.
Funeral services are planned for July 27, 2024 11:00 am at Riverside Avenue Christian Church, 2841 Riverside Avenue, Jacksonville, FL, 32205. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
When asked what he wanted in his obituary, he said "just write, 'you woke me up for this?!'". Classic Robert - he never lost his humor or his grace.
