Nancy Ann Layton Carey

July 7, 1957 — January 20, 2020

Nancy Ann Layton Carey, sixty-two, passed away after a brief fight with cancer on January 20th, 2020. She was surrounded by loved ones and family. Born in Queens, NY, Nancy grew up as the daughter of a naval officer and was raised in multiple cities before settling in Jacksonville, Florida in 1979. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, graduating with Great Honor (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of North Florida. She dedicated her life and career to the education of students with profound intellectual and physical disabilities. Her career spanned nearly three decades and was spent in the public-school systems of Nassau and Duval County, including more than a dozen of those years in service of the students of Mount Herman Exceptional Student Center. Nancy officially retired from education in December 2018.

Nancy enjoyed attending concerts, dining out, having her family and loved ones over for holidays and birthdays, and vacationing with her fiancé Bob. She was an environmentalist, a volunteer, and an advocate for peace. Nancy is survived by sons Kevin Ertle (daughter-in-law Brittany Ertle) and Andrew Carey, daughter Victoria Breedlove (son-in-law Matthew Breedlove), her grandchildren Lincoln Ertle, Quinn Ertle, Blake Ertle, James Breedlove, and Lily Breedlove, her love Robert Fegan, “adopted daughter” Ashley Fagan (son-in-law Joe Fagan), sister Linda Pennell, close friend Lane Campbell, and dog Bonnie. She is preceded in death by her parents Lynn and Donald Layton.

The family will celebrate Nancy’s life with friends and loved ones at home on Saturday, February 8th from 11am to 3pm.
