Myrna Nell Mincer, of Jacksonville, Florida, died at HCA Memorial Hospital on January 10.
Nell was born to Ovander Matthews Chambless and Clara Lucille Croft on March 6, 1935, in Jennings, Florida. She learned early to take care of others and in this skill found her calling, first as a nurse and then as a certified addictions specialist.
Missing her profoundly are four generations of loved ones, including her devoted husband of 33 years, Edmund Lee McCubbin, Jr; siblings William M. Wilson and Mary McLaughlin Rousseau; children, William H. McLaughlin Jr., Andi Elizabeth Mincer, Michael J. Mincer and Richard L. McCubbin; 13 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Her family also included siblings Linda L. Wilson Drury and John J. J. McLaughlin, III (both deceased).
Nell painted, sewed, practiced heirloom needlework, and baked and decorated cakes as delicious as they were beautiful. More often than not, she made gifts of her talents–fellow parishioners joked about getting sick on purpose so that Nell would deliver a pot roast. Once, faced with a boy in need of shoes, she elbowed her husband to give up the ones he was wearing. She had a generous definition of family, which made for lively Thanksgiving feasts, never complete without her pound cake and cherry pie. Nell found great joy in bringing people together, as well as in doting on her dogs Muggs and Max.
A memorial service will be held at San Jose Episcopal Church on Saturday, February 4, at 10 a.m. Nell requested that, in lieu of flowers, you support your local Humane Society’s efforts to improve the lives of dogs.
