Madelin (Madge) Eve Bruner was born September 27, 1938, in Cleveland, Ohio to Raymond Alphonse Bruner and Louise Katherine Eisele Bruner. Madge died at 2:59 am December 20,2023 at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Her love for music began at 4 years of age while playing piano with her grandmother until she was eight. She studied French at Terminal Tower in Cleveland until she was 13. Her life as a musician continued as she mastered the trumpet and flute, on her first move to Florida she played the sousaphone While at the University of Florida (GO GATORS!) She taught at Summer College, was in Symphonic Band, and earned the Outstanding Music Award.
Madge came to Jacksonville, played in the Jacksonville Symphony for ten years, and taught trumpet, clarinet, and saxophone to budding musicians. Madge sold records and musical equipment for a time at Barons and then spent several years in the Record Department at May Cohens.
Madge was one of the first women nationally to get a broadcasting license as she embarked on a thirty-year career as Music Program Director of WJCT-FM, Stereo Ninety. She was a strong voice for Music in Jacksonville earning the 1988 Eve Award for Arts, was on the Board of the Symphony, wrote Program Notes for the Symphony Programs and featured previews of coming concerts on air the day before.
Madge spent fourteen years as an Alto at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd followed by thirty-five years at St. John’s Cathedral.
Madge is survived by sister, Suzanne Louise Bruner, of New York City, her sister, Sylvia Marie Navaro (Jacques) and Niece, Cadine Louise (SISTAH) Navaro of Rouen, France and cousins William John Bruner of Detroit, Michigan and Charles Eisele Anderson of Lawtey, Florida. The Love of her Life and husband for almost twenty-seven years, Mel (Mr. Mouse) Hazen of Jacksonville, and sister-in-law Jane Hazen Makowski of Pawpaw, Michigan as wells as numerous other nieces, nephews, and grandnieces on Mel's side of the family.
A service of Celebration of Madge’s Life will be on Friday, February 9th at St. John’s Cathedral at 11:00am.
