Irene Lillie Carter Greene, 78, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away peacefully Sunday morning, March 26 th at 4:25 am. She was surrounded by her family at the McGraw Hospice Center. Irene was born to Rueben and Evelyn Carter on April 22, 1944. On March 9, 1963, at the young age of 18, she was wed to Bobby Lem Greene. Irene was the first member in her family to attend college. She broke glass ceilings as the first woman to work at Bellsouth as an internal security investigator. In 1976 she resigned from a remarkably successful career, to become what she had dreamed of for many years, a mother. Irene loved to travel with a notable fondness for locations such as the mountains, where she could engulf herself in nature and wildlife. She was an avid reader, loved to cook for family gatherings and enjoyed learning many new crafts. Irene will be remembered for her poise, grace and laugher in times of celebration, her immense strength and resolve in times of difficulty and an unwavering moral compass that easily guided her through life’s journey. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Carter. She is lovingly survived by her husband of 60 years, Bobby, her sister Gloria Philips, two daughters Karen Waters (Ryan) and Laura Greene, three grandsons Cohen and Hudson (Karen, Ryan), Linken (Laura) and her beloved chihuahua Poncey. A private Celebration of Life will be held to honor Irene’s influence on those who loved her.
