Helen Virginia Cothran Aston

August 5, 1947 — August 27, 2024

It is with profound sadness that the family of Helen “Johncie” Virginia Cothran Aston announce her passing. On August 27, 2024, Johncie passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at the age of 77 years old.

Johncie was born on August 5, 1947, in Columbia, South Carolina to John and Helen Cothran and lived in South Carolina until 1991 when she married her beloved husband David “Pop” Aston and settled in Suwanee, Ga. Johncie started her career at Southern Bell as a young adult where she retired after 30 years of service. She spent her life enjoying family time and putting family first. She loved genealogy, bowling, reading, drawing, the Falcons, the Braves, and her beloved Georgia Bulldogs. She adored playing card and board games with friends and teaching her grandchildren to appreciate the games she grew up playing. She also enjoyed watching her favorite movies from her childhood.

Johncie always loved water from the lakes to the oceans and spent her final years in Jacksonville, Florida where she looked out on the Ortega River every day. After retirement Johncie and Pop enjoyed traveling in their Motorhome across the country numerous times visiting almost every state in the United States. They also had a houseboat on Lake Lanier for 25 years where they spent many weekends enjoying the lake with their friends, children, and grandchildren. Johncie was very outgoing and had a joyful heart, she never knew a stranger and was known on the lake as the “dock therapist.” She always had a smile and an ear for those that needed to talk.

Johncie was preceded in death by her beloved husband David “Pop” Aston of 30 years as well as her siblings Patsy & Larry Goff, Sandra Whitman, and Steve Williams as well as her parents John and Helen Cothran.

She will be lovingly remembered by her children; Margaret Mueller, Adam Nuspliger, and his wife Krystle. Her stepchildren; Mark Aston and his wife Jennifer, Scott Aston and his wife Alisa, and Todd Aston. Her grandchildren; Kayleigh Aston, Connor Aston, Anastasia Aston, Shane Aston, Sam Mueller, and Jonah Aston.

A Memorial Service will be held at Saluda Shoals Park in the Saluda Shoals Park in Columbia, South Carolina on October 6th at 2:00 PM. There will be a second service later at Holiday Marina on Lake Lanier with dates to come. Johncie had so many friends and family that she loved dearly, and we would be happy for anyone to attend either memorial to celebrate her life and share the wonderful memories she has given us all.
