Gil W. Etheredge, 74 years old of Jacksonville, FL passed away on Thursday, September 5th at Hadlow Center Hospice surrounded by his family who love him dearly. He was born in Washington, DC on June 28, 1945 to James Tyron Etheredge and Dollie Marie (Sullivan) Etheredge. He graduated from Forrest High School in Jacksonville, FL in 1963 and attended the University of Georgia. He was in the US Marine Corp. active duty and reserves for 7 years and worked 26 years at the Seaboard Coastline and Florida East Coast Railroads. He loved sports, having played football in HS and was on the swimming team at UGA. He was an avid golfer from his teens throughout his adult life. He was actively involved in Little League Baseball in St. Augustine, FL where he lived for many years before moving back to Jacksonville. He also assisted in coaching the Special Olympics and volunteered as a counselor for kids attending Camp Healing Powers at Hospice. He loved to garden and to dance. He was most grateful for the love and support he received from church members at All Souls Anglican Church where he served as an usher and began a ministry obtaining old bicycles which he repaired and gave to those unable to drive. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and compassion for those in need, his love of the Georgia Bulldogs, and for his many years of valiantly battling Parkinson’s Disease and cancer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, an older brother, Jerry and by his oldest daughter, Erin Melissa Etheredge.
He is survived by his wife, Louisa (Lucki) Fellows Etheredge, his son, Jason Christopher Etheredge (Melanie), his daughter, Mandi Beth (Etheredge) Walker (Michael), 5 grandchildren, Justin & Ally Etheredge, and Kaitlyn, Kyndall & Josh Thomas. Two stepdaughters, Christy Blake & Kelly Kilpatrick, and 3 step-grandchildren, Anna Blake, Katie & Colin Kilpatrick; his sister Jean Etheredge Liston (Dan). Also by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews; and many dear friends.
There will be a Memorial Service to honor his memory on Saturday, September 21st at 2:00 PM at All Souls Anglican Church, 4042 Hartley Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson’s Foundation or to the American Cancer Society.
