Loving husband, father, Pop Pop, uncle, artist, mentor, and friend, Gary Lee Mahan sailed away from this life on the morning of May 23, 2022. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware on May 14, 1940, and recently celebrated his 82nd birthday surrounded by family.
Gary joined the United States Marine Corps in 1958 and served 6 years as a topographical draftsman. He then served a short stint as an undercover police officer in Ocean City, Maryland, followed by jobs at the 3M Company and Sears. He ran his own illustration, design, and drafting business, and worked as technical illustrator for the Space Program. He then studied independently to become an architect and practiced this profession for over 30 years until his retirement.
An avid sailor, Gary met the love of his life Dianne in a boatyard. The couple married and sailed to Florida for their honeymoon and liked it so much they decided to stay. Gary and Dianne enjoyed a marriage full of love, respect, and adventure and celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary last November.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents Alma Lucas and William Spencer Mahan, sister Anita Stumpf, and brother Lynn Mahan. He is survived by his wife Dianne Gluckert Mahan; children Scott Lee Mahan, Michael Todd Mahan, Anna Mahan McComb, Sean Patrick Mahan, and Amanda Beth Mahan; and grandchildren Kemie, Victoria, Cassie, Hannah, Abigail, Kara, Gretchen, Elias, Emily, Reid, and Deo.
A celebration of Gary’s life will be held on Sunday, May 29, 2022 at 4:00 p.m., at Mandarin Community Club, 12447 Mandarin Road, Jacksonville, Florida 32223. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Jacksonville Humane Society in honor of his many loved animals.
