Gary Wayne Elkins II, beloved Volusia County math, science, and reading teacher, passed away on April 28, 2024, in Jacksonville, Florida, surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. He was fortunate to have the love and support of a large family during his lifetime. He was 53 years old.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Gary was the cherished son of Gary W. Elkins and Sarah E. Elkins. Gary grew up in Brunswick, Ohio and was a graduate of Brunswick High School. He went on to attend Ohio State University and received his bachelor’s degree from Baldwin Wallace University. After his marriage to Sarah Beth Hinton of Strongsville, Ohio, they moved to Florida where he pursued his passion for education, dedicating himself to shaping the minds of countless students. Gary obtained his master’s degree from the University of Central Florida. Gary's enthusiasm for teaching was evident in his innovative methods and unwavering commitment to his students' success.
Outside of the classroom, Gary found joy in his hobbies. A fervent fan of wrestling, he idolized icons like Hulk Hogan and found inspiration in the larger-than-life heroics of Superman. His enthusiasm for these passions was infectious, leaving a lasting impact on those around him. Gary had a love of travel and enjoyed cruising with his wife and family. A few years ago, his lifelong dream of going to Alaska was realized with his wife, complete with a sightseeing train ride and helicopter tour.
Throughout his career, Gary demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication, rising through the ranks of the Volusia County education system to become the Math specialist at the district level instructing other teachers. His influence extended far beyond his classroom, touching the lives of students and colleagues alike.
Gary's journey was marked by strength and resilience, even in the face of adversity. Despite his diagnosis five years ago, he continued to inspire others with his unwavering spirit and determination. This included the diagnosis of two other family members.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Sarah Beth Elkins, his devoted parents, Gary W. Elkins and Sarah E. Elkins, his beloved sister, Jennifer L. Elkins, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be deeply missed for his quick wit and infectious smile by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his legacy of passion, kindness, and dedication will endure in the hearts of those whose lives he touched.
A celebration of Gary's life will be held on May 25, 2024, at The Waterfall at Mapleside Farms in Brunswick, Ohio. The internment of Gary’s ashes is planned to occur at the Barker Cemetery in Ashford, West Virginia a few days after the celebration of life.
