Eloise (Elvira) Adda Alver passed away, at the age of 93, on the evening of March 19, 2022, at Baptist
Medical Center South, Jacksonville, Florida. Lois, as she was called by family and friends, was born
October 3, 1928, in Elizabeth, N.J., the only child of R. James Adda and Silvia Adda (nee Pagano).
Over the course of her education, she attended 29 elementary schools and 7 high schools: graduating
from William Cullen Bryant High School, N.Y. at age 16. She graduated from Cornell University in 1949 with a B.A.
in Pre-Med. While a student of Cornell, she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and served as the chapter's
president her senior year. Lois went on to attend Law School at NYU.
While in the hospital for an emergency appendectomy, Lois met a young attending physician formerly
from Estonia. They soon fell in love and Eloise Elvira Adda and Eugene Craig Alver were married April 25, 1953.
They had three children, and while the kids were growing up Lois served as a Brownie Leader, a Junior Girl
Scout Leader, a Cadet Girl Scout Leader, a Senior Girl Scout Leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother, President of the
PTA, and Midget League Cheerleading Coach. With all of that she found time to serve as the President of the
Women's Medical Auxiliary of Backus Hospital, Norwich, CT.
The family left New England and moved to Florida in 1971. Lois didn't slow down. She became an officer of
the Northeast High School's Sports Booster Association. She also served on the Woman's Medical Auxiliary
in St. Petersburg, FL and was a state representative and lobbiest for Children's Health.
When the last child left for college, Lois threw herself into volunteer work in and around St. Petersburg.
She served as an officer for Goodwill Industries, Affinity, The Science Guild, and San Carlo Opera. She was on
the volunteer board of St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra and donated time to Special Olympics. Lois's
tireless efforts for charity were recognized when she was crowned the 1982 Queen of Hearts.
She was an avid traveler and when she moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1987, Lois went back to school and
became a travel agent. She opened her own agency, ABC Travel, in 1990. She used her personal knowledge
of places far and wide to steer her clients in the right direction. A lover of all forms of art, Opera and
Shaksperean performances were by far her favorites.
A daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Eloise was preceded in death by her
parents, James and Silvia Adda (Poppy and Nonny) and her beloved husband, Eugene Craig Alver, MD PhD.
She leaves behind her 3 children; Leslie Russell, Stacy Carr, and James Alver, MD, 7 grandchildren;
Craig Russell, Kyle Russell, Cody Russell, Christine Carr, Amanda Carr, James Garcia Alver, and
Charles Garcia Alver, and 2 great-grandchildren; Damon Russell and Asher Gill.
Lois will be remembered for her style, her strength, her devotion to family, and her commitment to making
this world a little better.
A date for the Memorial Service will be posted in the near future.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph's Indian School, St. Jude's Hospital, Special
Olympics, or Heifer International.
