David Edmond Gehrig was born on April 12, 1958, in Las Vegas, NV, to Donna Balen and Roy Orahood. Alongside his siblings, Vicki and Mark, he was later adopted by David Gehrig at the age of eight.
David had a love for the water, spending weekends at the lake water skiing and making cherished memories. A talented artist, he had a kind and gentle soul that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
A tragic car accident on May 19, 1981, changed the course of his life, leading him to live in assisted facilities for many years. Yet through all of life’s challenges, David never lost his sense of humor, his love for old Western movies, or his signature cup of coffee—always with two creams and four sugars, the only drink he ever needed.
Though much of their lives were spent apart, David held an unbreakable, unconditional love for his “baby girl,” Melissa Gehrig. Their long-awaited reunion on October 31, 2024, was a moment of pure joy, and soon after, David moved to Florida on December 4th to be surrounded by the love of his family. He found comfort and happiness living with his grandchildren—Ariel, Colin, Alice, Myles, and Elliott—as well as his favorite son-in-law, Joseph “Turkey” Largen.
David’s story of resilience and kindness reached and inspired people all over the world. Even after years of being forgotten, he never lost his positive attitude. His incredible journey was even recognized in People Magazine, ensuring that his legacy will live on.
On December 15, 2024, after more than three months of unwavering strength, David passed away, leaving behind a story of love, laughter, and inspiration. Though he is gone, he will never be forgotten. His memory will continue to shine in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
