Caroline Margaret Constable Portell

Caroline Margaret Constable Portell (93), beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2024 in Jacksonville, Florida. Caroline was born on August 6, 1931 in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, the third of four children, to Julia Bengini and Ralph Constable. As a young, fiercely independent woman, she moved to New York City where she met the love of her life, a young sailor named Sherman M. Portell. They married soon after, spending the next 59 years together until his death on March 25, 2014. She is survived by her brother Lou Constable (Louise); sons Sherman D. Portell (Lisa) and Keith Portell (Claudia); grandsons Sherman James, Andrew and Aaron Portell; and numerous nieces and nephews. Caroline worked most of her professional career as a bookkeeper. She was dedicated to her Catholic faith and enjoyed displaying her creativity through needlework, jewelry making and crafting. She was an avid card player, teaching all her grandsons the art of poker. A Mass of Christian Burial and graveside service will be held on February 7, 2025 at St. Joachim’s Catholic Church in Old Mines, Missouri. There she will be interred next to her husband.
