G. Bruce Douglas

November 9, 1934 — June 16, 2018

Bruce Douglas, age 83, of Jacksonville Beach, FL passed away on June 16 in Jacksonville Beach after a brief illness. Born to Gertrude E. and Charles V. Douglas on November 9, 1934 in Douglaston, New York, he attended Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn and graduated from The Taft School in 1952, excelling in Track & Field at both schools. After attending St. John’s University, he married and started his 20-year career with Sears Roebuck.  A change in jobs brought him to Jacksonville, FL as President and CEO of Sav-A-Stop, Inc. After a successful turnaround of the company, he became involved in the Investment Advisory industry where he would spend the next 35 years.

Bruce’s civic involvement and participation in outside organizations was extensive. He was instrumental in the founding of Community Hospice, Vicar’s Landing Retirement Community and Ponte Vedra National Bank. He served on many boards including Jacksonville Country Day School and Episcopal High School. He was also Commodore at Epping Forest Yacht Club.

One of his proudest and most passionate roles was serving as Chairman of Citizens Property Insurance, the government established, not-for-profit insurer of last resort for Florida residents.

Always an early riser, Bruce participated for over twenty years in The Breakfast Club, a group of Ponte Vedra men who would meet every morning at 6:00 am to fellowship, laugh and attempt to solve the world’s problems.

He will be remembered for his keen wit, his incredible public speaking ability and his unending service to his community. He loved his family and they loved him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles V. and Gertrude E. Douglas and brothers, Robert and Donald.

He is survived by his wife, Susan, his brothers Charles and John, his sisters Patricia, Diane, Carole and Maryann, his children Bruce (Merri), Chris (Jen), Jamie (Diane), Meghan (Chris), and Erin (Ramsey), fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 20 at Palms Presbyterian Church, 3410 3 rd Street South, Jacksonville, Beach, FL 32250.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the G. Bruce Douglas Memorial Campaign for Helping Hands for GAND.
