Betty Delong Roth Palmer

October 25, 1931 — March 15, 2021

Betty DeLong Roth Palmer, entered into the joys of her heavenly home on March 15, 2021. Betty was born to Carl Leslie DeLong and Anna Gail Davis DeLong on October 25, 1931, in Van Wert, Ohio. Betty was married to Gene Roth in May of 1953 until his death in December of 1954. In August of 1957, she married George W. Palmer, and they were married 45 years until his death in January, 2003.
Betty graduated from Stetson University in Deland, Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Betty taught in several elementary schools in St. Augustine and Jacksonville, Florida. She also worked as a bookkeeper and tax preparer for many years in her husband’s C.P.A. firm. She lived most of her adult life in Jacksonville and was a faithful member of Spring Glen United Methodist Church where she served on various church committees and boards and taught Sunday School. She particularly cherished her involvement in United Methodist Women and singing in the choir. She also volunteered in the church’s thrift shop which brought her a great deal of joy in her senior years. Her favorite verse of scripture is found in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
She is survived by five children, Hal (Kathy) Roth of Charlotte, NC, Debbie (Chuck) Parks of Gainesville, George (Amy) Palmer of Gainesville, Anne-Marie Palmer of Melbourne, and G. Michael (Heather) Palmer of Jacksonville; eleven grandchildren, Betty-Jane Parks of Clearwater, Thomas (Stephanie) Parks of Deltona, James Parks of Gainesville, Kathryn (John) Palmer Stacy of Tampa, Sarah (Alex Coldicott) Palmer of Vilseck, Germany, Rebecca Cook of Raleigh, NC, Matthew Cook of Tallahassee, Cordelia, Josephine, Genevieve, and Eleanor Palmer all of Jacksonville; and two great-grandchildren, Charlie and Jayelle Parks of Deltona. Betty was also devoted to her extended family and loved spending time with those she held dear.
She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Margaret Palmer; and by her siblings, Byron DeLong, Donald DeLong, Ruth Turner, and Earl DeLong.
A service of worship celebrating Betty’s life is planned for June 26, 2021, at 2:00 p.m. at Spring Glen United Methodist Church in Jacksonville.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spring Glen United Methodist Church or Haven Hospice of Gainesville, Florida.
