Born in Liegnitz, Germany on March 10, 1942, Ute Barbara Glafenhein came to the United States with her parents in 1953 settling in Atlanta, Georgia. She had lifelong pen pals and attended Druid Hills High School and Emory College of Nursing. A member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, Barbara became the sweetheart of the Delta Tau Deltas where she met Peter Stevens, her future husband of 34 years. During their marriage, Peter and Barbara lived in Atlanta, Minneapolis, San Diego, London, Durham, Chapel Hill, and finally Jacksonville. Together, they traveled the world seeing Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Africa, Hawaii, and Alaska. Both Peter and Barbara were supporters of the arts and athletics with season tickets to the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra and the Jacksonville Jaguars and enjoyed sailing on Ragamuffin. After Peter’s death, Barbara went back to school at the University of North Florida where she earned another degree in counseling which led her to be a chaplain and grief counselor at Baptist Medical Center. As an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Barbara began its St. Stephen Ministry which hosted health fairs for the community. Barbara was also an avid tennis player who enjoyed the game as well as the lunch with the ladies afterward.
Barbara is survived by her daughter Margaret Samford (Victor), a granddaughter Maria Samford, her brother-in-law Edward Stevens, and her sister-in-laws Helen Fell and Margie Stevens.
