With his cherished wife and son at his side, Archie Graham Alderman passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, January 25, 2020. He was born on September 6, 1942 to parents Annie May and Archie Graham Alderman in Wilmington, North Carolina. In 1960 the family moved to Jacksonville where Archie graduated from Terry Parker High School in 1963. He attended college at UNC in Wilmington and returned to Jacksonville to enter a 42-year career with FEC Railroad. Archie retired in 2009 as an Engine House Foreman and spent the last 11 years enjoying many interests. As he often said: “A man’s got to do what a man’s got to do.” Archie loved the outdoors and although his recent illness left him with once functioning eye, he was able to use that one eye, and with one shot, bag one deer for his last hunt. He loved trap and skeet shooting and the fresh air. He was an avid fisherman and was particularly fond of the Scum Hole that always provided a bounty of seafood for his freezer. That freezer also housed the harvest of his vegetable garden which he propagated, planted, and tended with a major green thumb. The softer side of Archie also enjoyed the beautiful flowers he grew.
He is survived by the love of his life, Terry (also known as “T”, “his woman” and “the best thing that ever happened to him”). His love for her was as strong as he was. They had one child, Archie Graham Alderman IV, who survives him. He is also survived by his brother, David, from Charlotte, NC. Further he leaves scores of friends and acquaintances who enjoyed his many yarns. Once a friend of Archie’s, you were always a friend.
Archie was a “cradle Episcopalian” and his memorial service will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, February 1, 2020 at San Jose Episcopal Church with Fr. Stephen Britt as celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in his name to Greenscape of Jacksonville (1468 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, 32207) and San Jose Episcopal Church (7423 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, 32217).
