Betty Jean Shuman, age 74, of Jacksonville, passed away on September 16, 2010. She was born in Badham (now Reevesville,) SC, the youngest child of the late Harry Shuman and Bessie Belle Walters Shuman, on April 10, 1936. She was a 1954 graduate of St. George High School, St. George, SC. Shortly after her graduation, she began work for Southern Bell in Charleston, SC, and then relocated to Jacksonville in 1959. Ms. Shuman continued to work in the telephone industry for more than 40 years. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Of America, and a lifetime member of the K-9 Obedience Club Of Jacksonville as well as the Jacksonville Dog Fanciers’ Association. Ms. Shuman was particularly fond of English Springer Spaniels. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her siblings Dixie Benton, Pearl Weeks, Bert Moore, Allen Shuman, Billy Shuman, and J. C. Shuman. Ms. Shuman is survived by her sisters and brothers: Dolly J. Coleman, Uvalda, GA; Evelyn S. Wimberly, Branchville, SC; Thomas R. “Pete” Shuman, Reevesville, SC; and Harris Shuman, Canadys, SC. She is also survived by Alan and Nancy Shook, Jacksonville; George and Judy Delves, Jacksonville; and many other friends and neighbors. No funeral or memorial service is planned.
