Sue Hing Eng Chang

June 8, 1951 — March 7, 2010

Sue Hing Eng Chang, beloved mother; loving daughter, sister, aunt; distinguished educator; determined troop leader and coach; loyal friend, passed away Sunday, March 7, at home surrounded by her devoted family. A Jacksonville native, Sue was born on June 8, 1951. She was graduated from Wolfson High School and Florida State University and received a master’s degree from UNF. She taught home economics in Duval County for thirty-five years, first at Andrew Jackson High, then Englewood, and during her last seventeen years, Sue was a revered teacher and community activist while at Mandarin High School. Students filled her class rolls, anticipating the fun times of learning to sew and becoming accomplished seamstresses and tailors. In fact, many high school males learned valuable sewing lessons from Sue, from sewing buttons on their shirts to making boxer and surfing shorts. She inspired some to choose fashion design as their college major. Her passion for sewing and inspiring students to serve others motivated her sewing club to make quilts for Adolescents in Hospice Care and stuffed animals for our local childrens’ hospitals. For her community service and exemplary dedication to education, Sue was awarded The Girl Scouts of America Jesse Elizabeth Meuse Diversity Appreciation Award 1997 and The Florida State University College of Human Sciences Centennial Gala Award 2005. Sue’s lengthy tenure graced and enriched the lives of thousands fortunate enough to be her student or friend. All will remember her welcoming smile, her good nature, her work ethic, her love and respect for life. Sue leaves as her legacy her incredible warmth, charismatic personality, and indomitable spirit.
Sue was preceded in death by her mother Lai Ho and is survived by her four children of whom she was so very proud, especially that they all had the perspicacity to follow their mom and become FSU graduates: Josh (Stephanie), Jenny, Jana, and Jill; a soon-to-be-grandchild, Chloe; Sue’s father, Benny Eng; the children’s father, Les; siblings, Bill Eng (Nikol), Jo Yip (Freddy),and Gene Eng (Elaine).
A dedication service is scheduled for Sunday, March 14, 2010, at 2:00 PM in the Mandarin High School auditorium, 4831 Greenland Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32258.
