Winnie Fluellen Greenlee

June 18, 1920 — March 6, 2010

Winnie Fluellen Greenlee was born on June 18, 1920 in Whatley, Alabama. Declining health took its toll in recent years. She passed away on March 6, 2010 at Northeast Florida Community Hospice in Jacksonville, Florida.
A few years after graduating from Shelby High School in Columbiana, Alabama, she moved to Washington, D.C., attended school and worked in federal government.
Miss Winnie moved to Jacksonville in the early 1950s and married John T. Greenlee Jr. She worked in the Data Communications and Supply divisions at Naval Air Station-Jacksonville for over thirty years. Mrs. Greenlee retired early to take care of her husband until his death in 1991. Being a widow presented its share of challenges, but she never allowed obstacles to deter her. Miss Winnie continued to expand her horizons in her golden years. After moving to St. John's County in the mid-1990s, she decided to return to school. Taking on a rigorous academic schedule was her way of keeping her mind active and sharp.
At the age of eighty, she earned a bachelor's degree in management from the University of Maryland's University College in the year 2000. After graduation, she logged her share of hours as a substitute teacher in the public school system. Although she had more than enough to keep her busy, she always carved out time to do her own yard work every week without fail. She got immense satisfaction from tending to her garden of flowers, plants, vegetables and shrubs.
Mrs. Greenlee, a member of The Episcopal Church Of Our Saviour, is preceded in death by her husband; twin brother William Fluellen; sister Lela Harris; and parents Robert and Alvanie Fluellen. Surviving relatives include her only son
Craig T. Greenlee (Cynthia) of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; four grandchildren: Carlos Greenlee of California; Monica Greenlee of Tallahassee, Florida; Bryan Greenlee (Karima) of Killeen, Texas; Erica Greenlee of Durham, North Carolina; two great-grandchildren: Zuri and Jayden Greenlee of Durham, North Carolina; a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Miss Winnie will be dearly missed.
