George Moore

January 26, 1919 — November 29, 2009

George William Moore, 90, of Chesnee, S.C. died November 29, 2009. He graduated from Spartanburg High School in 1936 and farmed with his father until entering the Army Air Force in 1942. He initially served as a flight instructor and then as a navigator on B-52 bombers in the Pacific Theatre, earning an Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinguished Service Cross. He returned to S.C. in 1945 with his wife, the former Eva Lou Bryan, built his home, and became a United States Rural Postal Carrier. He retired after 30 years service and spent his time gardening, visiting the sick, and baking his famous carrot cakes for fortunate recipients.
He was a life long member of the Southern Baptist Church, serving on many committees, as a Sunday School Teacher, and on the Board of Deacons. He was honored as Deacon Emeritus at Crossroads Baptist Church in 2006.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ed and Ann Moore; his wife, Lou; his brother, James; his sister-in-law, Vermell; and his brother-in-law, Lawrence Wood. He is survived by his daughter, Luann and her husband James; three grandchildren and their spouses; four great-grand children and two great, great grand children; his sister, Ruth Wood; his brother, Geddes Moore and his sister-in-law, Shalmir Moore; numerous nieces and nephews, and many, many cousins.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 A.M. at Crossroads Baptist Church. The memorial service will be held in the church sanctuary at 11:00 A.M. There will be no graveside service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Crossroad Baptist Church, 130 Conway Black Rd., Spartanburg, SC. 29307, or to Heartland Hospice, 8130 Baymeadows Way, Jacksonville, Fl. 32256, or to the American Heart Association, or to the American Cancer Society.
