Elizabeth Payne Ulmer

Elizabeth Payne Ulmer (Betty) passed away July 6, 2017. She was born in Jacksonville, FL, December 16, 1920, the daughter of Clifford Avery Payne and Elizabeth Axtell Payne. She attended Glynlea School (later Bartram School and now a part of The Bolles School) and graduated in 1938 from Robert E. Lee High School, where she was president of I.D.S. Sorority and graduated from Gunston Hall in Washington, D.C. In 1940, she was a debutante and a maid in Ye Mystic Revellers. She married Herman Ulmer, Jr. (Herdy) on August 1, 1942, who was her devoted husband and best friend for over 65 years. Her husband and her oldest daughter, Jean Ulmer Brinkman predeceased her. She is survived by three of her four daughters, Elizabeth Jolley (Warren), Dorothy Marsh (Jim, deceased), Frances Howey (Bill), her son-in-law Walter Brinkman, eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Betty was a lifelong member of Riverside Presbyterian Church, a former president and an honorary life member of the Women of the Church. She served on various Church committees, taught Sunday School and for over twenty years was a driver for Meals on Wheels. For eleven years she was an American Red Cross “Gray Lady” Volunteer at St. Vincent’s Hospital. A former member of the Junior League of Jacksonville, she served as Chairman of its Thrift Shop. She was a member of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of Florida in which she actively participated in many of its programs, serving three years as state president. She was chosen for the National Roll of Honor Florida Society and served as a docent at the Ximenez-Fatio House maintained by the Society in St. Augustine. She was a member of the Wednesday Club, a small group of a few of her dearest friends who met for lunch once a week for over fifty years. For the past 14 years she lived at St. Catherine Laboure Manor where she received the best care. Thanks to all the staff for their wonderful attention to her needs. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, July 15, 2017, at 2:00 at Riverside Presbyterian Church, 849 Park Street, Jacksonville, with The Rev. Dr. Carol Digusto and The Rev Dr.Stephen Goyer officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggests that donations may be made to the Riverside Presbyterian Church, 849 Park Street, Jacksonville, Fl 32204, The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of Florida (NSCDA-FL), 4114 Herschel Street, Ste. 109, Jacksonville, FL 32210, St. Catherine Laboure Manor, 1750 Stockton Street, Jacksonville, Fl. 32204, or a charity of your choice.
