Louis Jacob Tischler

Louis Jacob Tischler, age 91, died Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at Memorial Hospital of Jacksonville.

Lou was born in Wilkes-Barre, PA. He graduated in 1939 from Elmer L Meyers High School in Wilkes-Barre, earned his bachelor of science at Lafayette College in Easton, PA., in 1943. He worked for E.F. Houghton & Co. in Philadelphia, PA where he met his beloved wife Eleanor (Friedmann) Tischler (deceased). In 1944, he enlisted in the US Navy Hospital Corps on the home front. Once again a civilian, he pursued teaching chemistry at Lafayette College, then a masters of science at University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA.


He joined his uncle’s retail business in Charleston, W.VA., where he also taught chemistry at Morris Harvey College, was president of the Brotherhood at Virginia Street Temple and taught Hebrew on Sundays. In 1959, Lou returned to teaching high school chemistry at Haddon Heights High School, Haddon Heights, NJ, where he was honored as Teacher of the Year in 1967 and retired after 25 years in 1984. He was active in both community and synagogue life. He became president of the Lions Club, taught confirmation classes at Temple Emanuel, Cherry Hill, NJ and was the official game-day photographer for Haddon Heights High School football.

Lou enjoyed photography, swimming, golf, and traveling with Elly, his wife of 55 years. He was always proudest of the accomplishments of his surviving children, Joseph Tischler of Thousand Oaks, CA, Marion Tischler of Jacksonville, FL and Susan Tischler of Pompano Beach, FL and his surviving 3 grandsons, Micah, Eli and Adam.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 4, at 1:00 p.m. at the Jacksonville Jewish Center, 3662 Crown Point Road, Jacksonville. Interment will be at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, November 5, 2012 in Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Road, Jacksonville.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to Wounded Warriors, American Diabetes Association or American Heart Association or the charity of your choice.
