George A. Dan

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. (John 14:2-3)

George Dan, 79, went to meet his Lord on the morning of June 8, 2012, as a result of pancreatic cancer. He fought a valiant 13 month fight and died peacefully with his loving wife of 45 yrs, Lynda, by his side at the Community Hospice Earl Hadlow Center. George was born March 14, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan and moved to Jacksonville with his family in 1952.

He worked in circulation and advertising for the Jacksonville Journal and Times-Union for 44 years. He joined the newspaper in 1957 and eventually became a district manager in circulation. In 1968 he transferred to the retail advertising department, where he worked as a sales representative, classified advertising supervisor, creative sales manager and retail advertising manager among other positions. He retired from the Times-Union in 2001 as a national advertising sales representative. After retirement he went back to work part time at Nimnicht Buick GMC where he continued until June 2011. He also continued working part time for ATM Solutions owned by his brother in law and sister in law until December 2011. At 18 he went into the Army and served in the Korean war. George attended Jacksonville University for two years followed by a job selling insurance prior to taking the job at the newspaper in 1957. George was a long time faithful member of All Souls Church in Mandarin. Survivors include his wife, Lynda Dan, a son, Scott Dan, Jacksonville; a daughter, Danese Dan, Nahunta, Ga.; four grandchildren; Hailey Dan, Michael Dan, Hunter Hickox and Carson Hickox. He is also survived by two sisters, Georgia Isaac and Diane Gobble, both of Jacksonville.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at All Souls Church, 4042 Hartley Road. Mr. Dan is being cremated, and his ashes will go in a memorial garden the church is building.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Community Hospice of NE Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jax., Fl 32257 in memory of George.
