Muriel Madeline Grainger

Muriel Grainger, 81 of Jacksonville, FL passed away Saturday, July 2, 2011 in Community Hospice Northeast FL, Hadlow Center. She battled bladder cancer for nearly a year. She was born to Evelyn Bradstreet Ward Wright and Raymond Francis Ward on February 28, 1930 in Freedom, Maine. She graduated from Mortuary School in Philadelphia, Pa. Muriel was retired from accounting at Feldspar Industries, Inc and the construction industries as well. Muriel was a sports writer for the Mandarin Newspaper for a number of years. During this time, she covered association games, high school and middle school baseball, football and basketball. Muriel loved to write about sports, activities she attended with her family, poems and her favorite past time was working cross word puzzles. Muriel loved her family; she was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was a devoted Jaguar fan, loved her family and loved sports of all kinds. Her parents Raymond Ward, Evelyn Wright, two stepchildren Dora K. Strickland, Morgan E. Grainger, and ex-husband Frank E. Grainger, precede her in death. Her daughter, Evelyn Pionessa and husband, Jerry (G. J.) of Florahome, FL, grandsons, Gerald J. Pionessa Jr. (Jerry) and wife Shannon of Thomasville, GA and Mark E. Pionessa of Jacksonville, FL, Brother Boyd A. Ward and wife Sandra of Bucksport, Maine, Sister Brenda W. Moody and husband Carl of Liberty, Maine and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews survive her.

A memorial service to celebrate Muriel’s life 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 8, 2011 at Mandarin Presbyterian Church, 12001 Mandarin Road, Jacksonville, FL 32223 with Reverend Hugh B Ward officiating. Later internment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Freedom, Maine. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Community Hospice of Northeast FL, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL 32257.
