Mary Christine Smith

Mary Christine, went home to be with the Lord Feb. 17, 2011 a week short of her 98th birthday. During the Depression of the 1930's, her widowed mother moved the family from the farm in Horse Cave, KY to Louisville. Christine left school to support her mother and sisters by working as a waitress. Ms. Smith remained in the restaurant business her entire career and was hired to open the Executive Inn in 1963 when it was the largest hotel in Kentucky. She was Director of Food and Catering until her retirement in 1978. During her 15 years at the Executive Inn, she served as a Director on the Kentucky Restaurant Board and was the first woman chosen to the National Restaurant Association's Board. In 1976 she was named one of the 50 outstanding women in the nation in food service. At age 80, she built her own home in Jacksonville, FL and in 1997 moved in with her niece's family, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Matthews. She was a faithful member of Christ's Church Mandarin until she went into assisted living in 2009. A Memorial Service will be held at the church, Feb. 23 at 11:30AM.
