Katherine Gray Register

February 3, 1924 — August 1, 2010

REGISTER Katherine Yvonne Gray Register died August 1, 2010. She was the daughter of Frederick Norman and Mamie Campbell Gray and was born on February 3, 1924, in Oklahoma City, OK. She moved to Jacksonville in 1926. Katherine was a beautiful, elegant, and charming woman all of her 86 years. During high school at Andrew Jackson, George Robert Register, Jr., saw Katherine standing in front of a window with the light shining on her red hair. He told a friend that he was going to marry that redhead, and he did, on June 21, 1944. They were married 64 years and together raised five children. They enjoyed many close friends and traveled extensively. Katherine was an integral part of George's political and professional life. During her school years, Katherine excelled in academics and was offered a full scholarship to college; she was chaplain of her senior class. She was active in her churches, frequently involved in children's ministries, was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels, with many of her active years at Springfield Presbyterian Church and more recently, as a member of Riverside Presbyterian Church. She was predeceased by her husband George, parents Mamie and Fred, son Bruce Edward Register, grandson Holland Douglas Splane, and four of her five brothers and sisters. She is survived by her 5 children: George (Debra) Register, III, Nancy (Douglas) Splane, Douglas (Janine) Register, Mary Ellen Freda, Laura (John) Reinbold (Nashville, TN); her 15 grandchildren: Robert (Callie) Register, Rhett (Alice) Register, Rachel Register, Amelia Register, Jessica (Greg) Splane Veltkamp, Trevor Splane, Hadley Splane, Evan Freda, Brian Freda, Nicholas Freda, Amanda Reinbold, Emma Reinbold, Hannah Ruth Reinbold, and John Henry Reinbold; her 6 great grandchildren: Harriet Veltkamp, Griffin Veltkamp, Ryn Register, Cole Register, Julian Freda, and Harry Register; her sister Norma Gray Tatum; sisters-in-law Faye Gray and Emily Register Norton; and many nieces and nephews. The family is very grateful to the staff at Harbor Chase Assisted Living and Memory Care for their loving care, which they tirelessly provided to both Katherine and George with patience and tenderness. Katherine will be remembered for her unconditional love and the values which she modeled throughout her life. Services will be Friday, August 6, 2010, at 11:00 A.M. at Riverside Presbyterian Church, 849 Park Street, Jacksonville, FL 32204. Reception will follow immediately after the service. Donations may be made in Katherine's memory to Meals on Wheels at Riverside Presbyterian Church, 849 Park St., Jacksonville, FL 32204, and to Haven Hospice, 7301 Cypress Plaza Dr., Suite 119, Jacksonville, FL 32256.
